Located in South Yorkshire, Sheffield is a vibrant, bustling city with a diverse population and an industrial background. Home to two reputable universities, it houses over 550,000 people, including 60,000 students. While Sheffield has a reputation for being a relatively safe place to live and work, there are neighbourhoods where crime rates are higher than the city average.
In this blog, we’ll explore the five most dangerous areas of Sheffield, based on recent crime statistics. By examining the types of crime common in these areas, we’ll help you gain a clearer understanding of the challenges these communities face.

When it comes to crime rates, the fifth most dangerous area in Sheffield is Firth Park. A family-oriented neighbourhood, Firth Park is a ward located north of the city and consists of Firth Park, Longley, Parson Cross and some parts of Wincobank.
Firth Park has a crime rate of 145 crimes per 1,000 people and a crime count of 2,643 between December 2024 and June 2024. Violence and sexual offences were the top crimes committed in this time period, followed by criminal damage & arson and public disorder.
Consisting of Claywood, Manor, Manor Park, Park Hill and Wybourn, Manor Castle is a ward located in the eastern part of Sheffield. It is a historically working-class area and has experienced issues with crime linked to unemployment and poverty, positioning it as the fourth most dangerous area in the city.
With a crime rate of 147 crimes per 1,000 people reported between 2023 and 2024, Manor Castle sees its fair share of violent crimes and high rates of criminal damage and arson. On average, 64 crimes are committed per week in Manor Castle ward.
Covered by Burnt Greave wood until the latter half of the 19th century, Burngreave is an inner-city district of Sheffield located north of the city centre. It is home to over 27,000 residents and is known for its strong and diverse sense of community.
According to Sheffield City Council, Burngreave falls within the 20% most deprived areas of South Yorkshire and sees an average of 88 crimes committed per week. Violent crime is one of the most pressing concerns in Burngreave, followed by public disorder and anti-social behaviour. This places Burngreave as number three on the list of most dangerous areas in Sheffield.
Initially a small hamlet known for farming and coal mining, Darnall is a largely residential and industrial area located to the east of Sheffield’s city centre. It is the third most deprived area of Sheffield, falling within the top 10% of deprived communities in the country. The socio-economic challenges the area faces have contributed to its reputation as one of the city’s higher crime areas, with various offences affecting the community, including violence, sexual offences and shoplifting.
Darnall is the second most dangerous area in Sheffield, with a crime rate of 77 and 4,250 crimes recorded between December 2023 and June 2024. It is considered the most dangerous ward when it comes to vehicle crime.
Sheffield’s city centre is considered the most dangerous area of Sheffield in terms of crime.
A vibrant hub that attracts locals and visitors, the city centre sees a high number of people visiting daily and a variety of crimes that reflect the busy environment. With a crime rate of 152 per 1,000 people, Sheffield city centre experiences high levels of crime relating to violence, sexual offences and theft. According to ADT, an average of 197 crimes were committed per week in the city centre between September 2023 and August 2024.
Nightlife in the city centre contributes to a rise in violent crime, especially during weekends when alcohol-related incidents are more common. This includes assaults and disorderly conduct outside bars and clubs. What’s more, the sheer volume of people in the city centre, especially during peak shopping hours or evenings, makes the area more vulnerable to crimes like pickpocketing and shoplifting.
