Daventry’s Local Area
Based in the west of Northamptonshire, in the East Midlands of England, Daventry is a market town with a rich history. The area around the town has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with evidence showing that this goes back as far as the neolithic period.
The town itself has origins dating back to Saxon times, with its name being derived from the Saxon for “Daecca’s tree”. While it’s strategic location on the “Jurassic Way” trade route, the town became a relatively important centre for trade during the Saxon period.
However, it wasn’t until the Mediaeval period that the town really began to flourish, when Daventry was granted a market charter in the 12th century. With the opening of the market, businesses in the town were able to trade with merchants from the surrounding area, promoting wealth in the area.
Today, the market still takes place regularly, although at a reduced scale. Instead, other landmarks and amenities in the town bring people to the town. The Daventry Museum preserves and showcases the history of the town, from its early prehistoric origins right up to the present day.
The Daventry Country Park, 13th century Holy Cross Church and Daventry sculpture trail also bring visitors to the town.
