Boston’s Local Area
Situated on the River Witham in Lincolnshire, Boston is a market town with a rich history. Dating back to Saxon times, the town began to prosper during mediaeval times, thanks in part to the market which started in the 12th Century and the rich, fertile lands surrounding it.
The Boston Guildhall, built at the tail end of the 14th Century, is one of the oldest surviving buildings in the town. While it originally served as a civil building for tradesmen, government officials and more, today it’s a museum and heritage centre.
Another historic landmark is St. Botolph’s church, which features an impressive tower standing at over 270 feet tall. Throughout its history, the town’s port played a key role in its commerce and trade.
Coal mining was also a major industry in the area during the 19th and 20th century, helping the town grow its economy and population. Today, the town has much more diverse means of commerce and modern attractions. The Boston Barrier, a flood protection project in the area, created jobs in the area.
Other attractions to the town are the Boston United Football Club, Central Park, and the Maud Foster Windmill.
