Bolsover’s Local Area
Situated in the East Midlands of England, Bolsover is a historic market town. It’s roughly 18 miles northeast of Derby.
With evidence of human settlement dating from prehistoric times alongside signs of Roman activity, the area around Bolsover has been inhabited for thousands of years. The town slowly grew over the centuries, and in 1066, Bolsover Manor was given to the Peverel family by William the Conqueror. The Peverel family then built the first castle in the area, although there are very few remains of this original structure.
The castle that stands today was built in the 17th century. Designed as a retreat and hunting lodge, it nevertheless featured in the English Civil War later that century, being besieged by Parliamentarian forces before the Royalist holders eventually surrendered without a fight.
Since then, the town has continued to grow, largely in part due to the industrial revolution’s effect on coal mining and quarrying in the area.
Today, visitors are often brought to Bolsover by Creswell Crags, which contain evidence of prehistoric occupation such as cave art and artefacts. The town also features a parish church which dates back to the 12th century, and the weekly market which has been running for centuries, although now with diminished importance to the town.
