Although statistically considered the safest place in the West Midlands, Coventry ranked highest for anti-social behaviour in January 2024, with 229 instances reported in one month alone. There were also 205 cases of burglary in the month of January, with 205 crimes recorded per 1,000 people.
However, overall, the most commonly reported crimes in Coventry are violence and sexual offences. 16,323 such offences were reported in 2023, 10% fewer than the year before. The least common crime in Coventry is bicycle theft, with 489 offences recorded in 2023.
But where in Coventry are these crimes committed? And which areas are considered the most dangerous?
When it comes to crime, the fifth most dangerous place to live in Coventry is Radford. Located 1.5 miles north of Coventry, Radford is a largely residential area home to around 20,000 people. In Radford, 150 crimes are committed per 1,000 people, with the most common crimes being violence and sexual offences.
Number four on the list of dangerous areas in Coventry is Longford, a residential neighbourhood located in the north of the city. It has a population of around 20,000 people and a crime rate of 145 crimes per 1,000 people. As of 2024, 2,375 crimes have been recorded in Longford, with the top crimes being violence and sexual offences followed by vehicle crime.
Henley is the third most dangerous area in Coventry in terms of crime. Located northeast of the city centre, Henley is a mostly residential suburb of Coventry. For every 1,000 people in Henley, there are 103 crimes, with violence, sexual offences and vehicle crime being among the top crimes committed.
Foleshill is statistically the second most dangerous ward in Coventry. Foleshill is a suburb in the north of Coventry, with a population of around 22,000. It has a crime rate of 153 crimes per 1,000 people, most commonly violence, sexual offences and shoplifting.
Number one on the list of the top five most dangerous areas of Coventry is St Michael’s, which covers the city centre of Coventry and the Charterhouse and Hillfields neighbourhoods. According to CrimeRate, St Michael’s is the most dangerous area in Coventry, with 163 crimes committed per 1,000 people. The top crimes reported in this area are violence, sexual offences and anti-social behaviour, with 7,622 crimes recorded as of 2024.
According to Coventry’s Community Safety Plan, the council intends to consult members of the public on issues relating to crimes like anti-social behaviour to determine how they are affected in their area. Strengthening the local community and protecting its most vulnerable members are among Coventry City Council’s key priorities.
